LNG Bunkering: A New Trend in the Maritime Industry?

26 de February de 2026

LNG bunkering is the process of supplying liquefied natural gas (LNG) as fuel to ships. The term bunkering traditionally refers to fueling vessels, and in this specific case, it applies to the supply of LNG instead of conventional marine fuels such as heavy fuel oil or marine diesel oil.

The growing importance of LNG as a fuel is due to its cleaner and more efficient alternative to traditional marine fuels. LNG significantly reduces harmful emissions such as sulfur oxides, particulates, and CO₂, helping the maritime industry meet the increasingly strict environmental regulations.

In this complete guide, we will explore the concept of LNG bunkering, its advantages, current trends, challenges faced by the industry, and the future projections of this fuel in the maritime sector.

At SUARDIAZ Group, we have a bunkering division within our Energy division. Feel free to contact us if you’re seeking more information and details about our bunkering services.

What is LNG Bunkering and Why is it gaining traction?

LNG bunkering is the process of supplying liquefied natural gas as fuel to vessels. It is increasingly used in maritime transport as an alternative to traditional fuels, enabling cleaner and more efficient navigation.

LNG is natural gas cooled to -162 °C, stored in liquid form at low temperatures to reduce its volume, making transportation and storage efficient. For ships, LNG bunkering involves transferring this liquefied gas from supply stations to the ship’s tanks. Improvements in cryogenic technology and the development of specialized port infrastructure have boosted its adoption in the maritime sector. The result is a significant reduction in harmful emissions, compliance with current and future environmental regulations, and good operational efficiency. Moreover, it is considered a transition solution towards even more sustainable fuels.

Advantages of LNG in Maritime transport

LNG offers a substantial reduction in harmful emissions, especially sulfur oxides, particulates, and CO₂. It enhances regulatory compliance, reduces the environmental impact of maritime transport, and provides higher energy efficiency compared to traditional fuels.

Environmental benefits

The use of LNG instead of traditional fuels such as marine diesel brings immediate benefits in terms of reduction of harmful emissions. Some of the most notable benefits include:

  • CO₂: The reduction in CO₂ is significant, reaching up to 20% compared to traditional fuels.
  • NOx and SOx: LNG reduces nitrogen oxide and sulfur oxide emissions by 80-90% and 99% respectively, minimizing air pollution and harmful health effects.

Economic benefits

Although the initial costs of transitioning to LNG technology can be high, the long-term benefits are clear:

  • Fuel cost savings: Despite the initial investment, LNG tends to be cheaper than other marine fuels in the long run.
  • Operational efficiency: LNG-powered engines are more efficient, improving the profitability of maritime operations.

When compared to traditional fuels, LNG proves to be a more cost-effective option for the future of the maritime industry.

Current trends in LNG Bunkering in the Maritime industry

The use of LNG is on the rise due to the increasing number of vessels powered by this fuel and the development of bunkering infrastructure in strategic ports. Moreover, LNG is establishing itself as a transition fuel in the decarbonization of the maritime sector.

According to the European Commission and the IMO, the number of vessels using LNG has been growing, with over 200 vessels operating with this fuel worldwide. In terms of infrastructure, some key ports are already implementing LNG bunkering stations to meet the growing demand across continents, such as in the ports of Rotterdam and Singapore.

Challenges in adopting LNG for bunkering

The lack of suitable ports and LNG supply stations is one of the main challenges. The investment in the necessary infrastructure is costly and, in many cases, not available in all international ports.

Adapting ships to LNG bunkering technology requires a significant initial investment to modify engines and storage systems. This can be a barrier for small and medium-sized companies in the maritime industry.

There are also technological challenges related to safety, efficient storage, and the distribution of LNG, as well as logistical difficulties in transporting this fuel globally.

Ultimately, the main challenges are the required investment in infrastructure and ship adaptation, the availability of supply in all ports, and the management of indirect emissions such as methane. Overcoming these hurdles will be key to the sustainable expansion of LNG bunkering.

The future of LNG in Maritime transport

The future of LNG in the maritime sector looks like that of a key transitional fuel toward more sustainable shipping. In the short to medium term, it will continue to gain prominence due to its ability to reduce emissions and meet environmental regulations, supported by the growth of fleets and bunkering infrastructure.

In the long term, its evolution will be tied to the incorporation of biomethane and e-LNG, which will allow for further reductions in the carbon footprint while maintaining existing infrastructure. Thus, LNG will serve as a bridge to carbon-neutral fuels, contributing to the progressive decarbonization of maritime transport.

Is LNG the fuel of the future for the Maritime industry?

LNG bunkering has proven to be a viable and sustainable option for the maritime industry. Its environmental and economic advantages position it as a solid alternative to traditional fuels. While there are still barriers to widespread adoption, current trends and growth projections indicate that LNG will play a key role in the transition to more sustainable maritime transport. If you are looking for more information on bunkering services and LNG adaptation, you can find more details on our website or by contacting us via email or phone.
