Embracing LNG: Key Insights and Challenges of Bunkering in Maritime Transport

9 de June de 2025

The use of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) as marine fuel has gained prominence in recent years as a cleaner alternative to traditional fossil fuels. Driven by regulatory pressure to decarbonize maritime transport and the need to reduce pollutant emissions, LNG bunkering represents a key step toward a new generation of more sustainable maritime operations.

However, this technological and energy shift also presents significant operational, logistical, and infrastructure challenges. The future of LNG bunkering depends on its ability to integrate effectively into the maritime logistics chain without compromising operational efficiency or safety.

A Cleaner Fuel Aligned with International Regulations

LNG is emerging as one of the leading short- and medium-term solutions to meet emission reduction regulations set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), particularly regarding sulfur content limits and upcoming requirements related to ships’ carbon footprint.

Compared to traditional fuels, LNG can reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by up to 90%, virtually eliminate sulfur oxide (SOx) emissions, and cut CO₂ emissions by around 20–25%. This favorable environmental profile makes it an attractive option for shipowners looking to comply with regulations without waiting for the maturity of even cleaner technologies like hydrogen or green ammonia.

Expansion of Bunkering Infrastructure: A Strategic Move

The rise of LNG as a marine fuel has been accompanied by the gradual development of bunkering infrastructure in key ports across Europe, Asia, and the Americas. More terminals are now equipped to supply LNG to vessels via barges, mobile tankers, or fixed port connections.

In Europe, initiatives like CORE LNGas hive in Spain and the facilities in Rotterdam, Antwerp, or Marseille reflect institutional support for building a solid network that facilitates the adoption of LNG in both short- and long-distance maritime transport. This infrastructure is crucial to ensure fuel availability, avoid operational bottlenecks, and build trust among shipowners investing in LNG-powered fleets.

Operational and Logistical Challenges in LNG Handling

Although the environmental benefits of LNG are well-proven, its operational use requires overcoming various technical and logistical hurdles. The primary challenge lies in adapting both newbuilds and existing vessels to LNG propulsion systems, which involves significant investment and, often, a redesign of onboard storage spaces.

Moreover, LNG bunkering demands strict safety protocols, specialized staff training, and precise coordination between the vessel, supplier, and terminal to mitigate risks during fuel loading. The cryogenic temperature at which LNG is stored (around -160 °C) and the potential for boil-off gas (BOG) present additional challenges that must be carefully managed.

Economic Impact and LNG Price Evolution

Another key factor for widespread adoption is the economic competitiveness of LNG compared to other available options. While its price per energy unit has often been favorable, it remains subject to volatility influenced by geopolitical conditions, global availability, and overall energy market demand—not just maritime shipping.

For example, the war in Ukraine triggered supply tensions in Europe’s natural gas market, affecting LNG availability for bunkering as well. This highlighted the need for diversified sourcing and stable supply contracts to prevent price fluctuations from becoming a barrier to long-term LNG adoption.

Compatibility with Energy Transition Goals

While LNG is not carbon-neutral, it acts as a viable transitional fuel capable of reducing the environmental footprint of maritime transport immediately. Its compatibility with biomethane and other renewable gases opens the door to hybrid solutions that extend its usefulness without requiring a radical transformation of existing infrastructure.
